LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide — a 37-amino acid peptide cleaved from the hCAP18 precursor protein. It serves as a first-line innate immune defense with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Beyond direct antimicrobial action, LL-37 modulates immune cell recruitment, promotes wound healing, stimulates angiogenesis, and regulates inflammatory responses. It disrupts bacterial membranes through electrostatic interaction with lipopolysaccharides. Research has expanded to include anti-biofilm activity, tumor immunology, and autoimmune modulation.
